Title

Presentation and discussion regarding Home To Texas Internship Program facilitated by the University of Texas at Austin.

Summary

Home To Texas is a scholarship-funded summer program that connects first-year University of Texas students with internship and research opportunities in their hometown communities. This program is being offered by UT’s Texas Career Engagement Department.  One employer from each community is selected, through an application process, to receive a full $5000 scholarship to fund a student intern.

After positive response from Pflugerville, the Home To Texas program director reached out to PCDC and the other companies who applied and offered a few more employers/students to the Pflugerville area, if employers are willing to equally split the cost of the scholarship with UT, and offered a match of $2500.

The intern will be working with the PCDC staff beginning Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, July 26.  They will participate in retention and workforce development, along with other duties as assigned.

Prior Action

PCDC applied to receive full scholarship funding of $5000 to host a student.  PCDC publicized the opportunity and reached out to our primary employers to encourage the opportunity. Several local firms applied and one was selected for the full $5000 scholarship.  Three of those who applied were offered a $2500 matching grant.  PCDC Board of Directors and City Council approved the FY24 Workforce Development Fund of $350,000.  We will fund the matching grant out of those funds.
