Summary
As part of an annual spot check and speed safety program, TxDOT performed a speed study in order to establish Speed Zone updates including the speed limit on FM 1825 (Pecan Street). The existing speed limits on FM1825 (Pecan Street) are 50 mph from the western City limits to approximately 5th Street, 30 mph from approximately 5th Street to approximately Robbins Street, and 45 mph from approximately Robbins Street to FM 685. The existing school zone for Pflugerville High School along FM 1825 (Pecan Street) is 35 mph. A speed zone study for the F.M Highway 1825 (Pecan Street); was conducted by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on March 12, 2019 and Aug 6, 2020 on identified sections of the FM 1825 (Pecan Street) in both directions, between Dessau Road and Wells Branch Parkway. TxDOT gathered data using a speed radar device during peak and off-peak periods to capture travel speeds that were more likely to be considered free-flow, or unimpeded by the influence of other vehicles, to assess what an isolated driver would consider to be a safe speed to traverse the roadway.
Per the speed study conducted and recommended by TxDOT, City staff is proposing to amend Chapter 72 of our Code of Ordinances specifically relating to speed limits on city streets by updating the speed limit on FM 1825 (Pecan Street) to 45 mph from the western City limits to approximately 5th Street and 40 mph from approximately Robbins Street to FM 685. The section of FM 1825 through downtown from approximately 5th Street to approximately Robbins Street will remain 30 mph. The existing school zone for Pflugerville High School will be updated 30 mph. This action updates our ordinance to be in compliance with state law in order to enforce speed limits on city streets. The recommended speed limit is a result of the speed study.
The proposed amendment is establishing updated speed limits as identified and has been coordinated with the Pflugerville Police Department for upcoming installation, when approved.
