Proclamation designating July 2011 as Parks and Recreation Month in the City of Pflugerville.

Summary

During the 111th Congress the House of Representatives on March 26, 2009 passed House Resolution 288 recognizing the importance of park and recreation facilities and expressing support for the designation of the month of July as National Park and Recreation Month.  Since 1985, The National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) and America have celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month.  This year NRPA’s theme is “Rock Your Park!”  NRPA encourages agencies to recognize the importance of park and recreation facilities and express support for the designation of the month of July as National Park and Recreation Month. NRPA is asking agencies to have their local government officially designate July 2011 as Park and Recreation Month.

Parks and Recreation connects people both young and old to the opportunities, places, and inspiration that keep us going in mind and in body. Parks and recreation provides opportunities for our community to be active, healthy, and thriving, now and in the future. The community is invited to create a healthy habit by getting out to a park, trail, playground, swimming pool, natural area, or other public space during the month of July in celebration of National Park and Recreation month. Additionally the community is challenged to make a personal commitment to get outdoors by signing up for the Great Park Pursuit.

The Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan outlines five goals that support the community’s overall vision of a system of high quality parks and the network of connected trails that make Pflugerville the most desirable community in Central Texas. The activities planned for the month of July encourage the community to get out and be active in the parks and trail system.

The Parks and Recreation Department has many activities planned to “Rock Your Park” during the month of July:

• The Great Park Pursuit- Information available at www.cityofpflugerville.com/rockyourpark and at the Recreation Center.

• July 1st Pfree Pfirst Pfriday at the Recreation Center 6p-9p.

• July 1st coloring contest begins. Information available at www.cityofpflugerville.com/rockyourpark at the Recreation Center.

• July 5th The Detentions will perform at the Pflugerville Pfarmers Market.

• July 8th Invincible Czars will perform at Music in the Park. It will also be “Rock and Weird Place” T-shirt night. We are asking everyone to wear a “Rock and Weird Place”

    t-shirt to the concert.

• Week of July 10th-15th paint a pet rock contest. Bring your decorated rock to the Recreation Center for display. Winner announced July 15th.

• July 30th Pfree Splash Day at Windermere Pool 12:30pm-7:00pm.

Fiscal Impact

The projected cost associated with the planned activities is minimal. The July 5th Detentions concert was previously planned as part of the weekly entertainment schedule at the Pfarmers Market and will be funded from the general fund through the department’s operations and maintenance Pfarmers Market expense budget. The Invincible Czars concert was previously planned as part of the Music in the Park series and will be funded from the general fund through the department’s operations and maintenance special programs expense budget. The indirect cost associated with the Pfree Pfirst Pfridays and Pfree Splash Day are anticipated to be offset by potential future revenue from Recreation Center memberships and pool passes purchased.
