Title
Approving a memorandum of understanding with Pflugerville Independent School District to participate in a Skilled Trades Academy, and authorizing the City Manager to execute the same.
Summary
Over the past 4 years, the City has been working closely with Pflugerville Independent School District (PfISD) to facilitate working with local high school seniors that were unsure if they were interested in attending college to explore work within the water and wastewater trade. The City has facilitated this through participation in various school events to discuss with students not planning to attend college the careers that are within the water and wastewater sector. City staff have also provided summer internships for students interested in working in the water and wastewater sector to provide a path for them to possibly continue working within the trade. This partnership has always been informal and has only had minimal involvement from students with PfISD.
Within the past 2 years, the City and PfISD have made a concerted effort to work with the Texas chapter of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to regionalize the Skilled Trades Academy to include the cities of Round Rock, Austin, and Manor. This allowed for a more regional approach to encouraging high school students across the region to evaluate the possibility of entering into a skilled trade. With this approach, the consortium has attracted over 23 local high school students who are not planning to attend college to work with local water and wastewater utilities to progress within the water and wastewater field.
The Memorandum of Understanding being considered is to memorialize our continued partnership with PfISD to ensure that we can continue to keep local students not planning to attend college within their local community and working within a trade that is going to have a significant impact on each of our local communities in developing a strong workforce that can replace the retiring workforce we have in the water and wastewater industry. This Memorandum of Understanding has been reviewed and approved by PfISD for use within the Skilled Trades Academy.
