Informational presentation about the Pecan Street Community Garden.

Summary

The Pecan Street Community Garden is located next to the baseball fields in Travis County NE Metro Park at 15500 Sun Light Near Way. The garden offers a variety of plots for use in different sizes and is available to residents living within the city limits of Pflugerville and its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ).

Garden plot prices range from $50 to $12.50 depending on the chosen growing season. Fifty percent (50%) discounts are available for seniors (55 and older) and students (18 years of age or younger with parental consent.)  A table of prices is listed below.

Planting seasons for the garden are:

Spring Gardens: February 1 to July 31

Fall Gardens: August 1 to January 31

The garden follows the hours of operation of Travis County North East Metro Park, which vary depending on the season, but is open seven days a week. Only organic pest controls or nutrients are allowed within the gardens and water is provided to gardeners at no charge. A community tool shed is also available, containing hand tools for gardeners’ use. Children are encouraged to participate, but must be supervised at all times.

The community garden offers a great opportunity to meet other individuals that are knowledgeable about plants, gardening and organic principles. The gardens are a perfect place to blend old and young...older ways and new technology, tried and true or new plantings, and the latest in organic gardening practices. Gardeners are encouraged to use their creativity with plant selection to create an attractive, aesthetic garden with a bountiful harvest. Gardeners are responsible for weeding their garden and paths adjacent to their plots on a regular basis.

Fiscal Impact

None.
