Approving the purchase and installation of playground equipment at Cambridge Estates Park in the amount of $213,432, and authorizing the City Manager to execute the same.
Summary
Cambridge Estates Park, is linear park located in multiple sections along the Cambridge Estates Trail between Stevenage Drive and Botany Bay Circle. The playground is located along eastern side of Stevenage Drive and was originally installed in 2008, making the equipment 17 years old. A map is attached for reference.
The planned renovation replaces a playground designed for ages 2-5 and now includes a new play structure designed for children ages 2-12, along with an expanded nature-play themed elements that features custom climbing rocks and rope climbers. Renderings of this playscape are attached. The existing shade canopy, installed after the original structure, remains in good condition and will be retained.
According to parks and recreation industry standards, playground equipment should be replaced every 15 years to ensure safety, accessibility, and continued community engagement. This project aligns with that best practice and supports the City’s commitment to proactively maintaining park assets.
Since 2021, the City has successfully reduced the average age of its playgrounds from 11.63 years to 5.39 years. With the completion of this replacement and the recently approved Barley Field Park upgrade, the average age of City playgrounds will drop further to 4.33 years-demonstrating continued progress toward long-term infrastructure goals.
Funding for this project was approved in the current fiscal year through the Annual Park Improvement Outlay. The selected vendor, Fun Abounds Inc., is a BuyBoard contract holder (#679-22), allowing for efficient and cost-effective procurement.
