Summary
This council item provides communication devices (called Glance from Applied Information) to connect the City’s traffic signals to a central software, Centracs Mobility (already purchased and installed). This cellular connection is recommended due to radio band interference
The Glance devices purchased through this item monitor critical traffic signal cabinet status and functions, reporting back temperature, door openings, and other valuable information. The communications provided by this item will help provide automatic alerts to City maintenance staff when there is a signal issue or outage. Glance will also allow City staff the ability to remotely investigate traffic signal operations and monitor status, increasing response time and improving the identification and remedy of operational issues. Glance paired with the City’s previously procured Centracs Mobility system also will record and report traffic signal performance measures, helping City staff and their consultants identify traffic signal issues and trends over time before they become larger problems in the future. This purchase will provide this critical communications connection to each signal for a period of 10 years, and it includes system upkeep and maintenance by the service provider, Applied Information.
The Glance units in each cabinet also provide a future platform to leverage emergency vehicle preemption, providing faster changes to green time for fire, medical, and/or police emergency service vehicles. A further purchase would be necessary later for each vehicle to utilize emergency vehicle preemption, but this current purchase of Glance provides the equipment necessary in the cabinet, making it future-ready.
