...Summary
The PCDC annually budgets for public and recreational improvements. This request is for funding $600,000 for improvements to a new plaza planned within the Downtown East development.
The Downtown East project is planned for the northwest corner of FM685 and Pecan Street and includes a new Multi Generational Recreation Center, City Hall, plaza and mixed use development. The plaza planned for the project is intended to serve as a central focus of the project, offering space for the Pflugerville community to gather both in passive and active recreation. As the plaza design is underway funding needs to support features within the plaza have been identified, specifically for a water play feature and stage. These two features within the plaza, will help to create a vibrant sense of place for the Pflugerville Community, as they provide for additional opportunities to play and engage.
The plaza is approximately one acre in size and will feature a great lawn, games, seating, infrastructure to support Pflugerville pfestivals, and opportunities to bring the adjacent Multi Generational Recreation Center programming outdoors.
Construction of a plaza in a downtown setting can serve as a catalyst for economic development by attracting both locals and tourists, boosting local businesses and creating job opportunities. Vibrant public spaces have been shown to increase property values in the surrounding area, making it more attractive for investors and developers, which will help to ensure the success of vision established for Downtown East.
