Title
Approving a resolution to rename the Pflugerville Community Library as the Pflugerville Public Library.

Summary
In anticipation of the completion of the library expansion and renovation project, the naming convention associated with the City's library has been evaluated. As a result of the project, the facility will be nearly double the size of the facility completed in 1999 serving at the Pflugerville community that has grown 187% for the period of 2000-2010. The Pflugerville Community Library was established as a grassroots effort, in recognition of the emerging need to develop a community library. In recent years however, Pflugerville has emerged to become a viable suburb, surpassing 50,000 residents with an additional 15,000 residents in the Pflugerville extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ).

The Texas Library Systems Act (Chapter 441 of the Texas Government Code) establishes various standards for the establishment and operation of public libraries. The Act defines a "Community library" as a small public library serving a population of less than 25,000 that is a member of a library system interrelated to a major resource center, and a "Public library" as a library that is operated by a single public agency or board, that is freely open to all persons under identical conditions, and that receives its financial support in whole or part from public funds.

Status
The expansion and renovation project continues and remains on schedule for completion by April 13, 2013. The expansion phase of the project will open to the public on Saturday, January 19, 2013. The existing building is now closed for renovations.
