Title

Discuss and consider action to approve the commissioning of “Sweethearts,” a kinetic bike sculpture by Amos Robinson.

Summary

From December '24 to January '25, the City conducted a nationwide Call for Artists to purchase existing sculptures or commission new sculptures. “Sweethearts” is a sculpture within the “Love your Bike” series by Amos Robinson and is proposed for consideration by the Parks & Recreation Commission.

Artist Statement: “Introduced in 2008, bicycle sculptures are popular choices for both public and private collections. When enlivened by wind and light, they fascinate people of all ages with their movement, reflections, and shadows. Their appeal also reflects a prevalent interest in cycling for pleasure, transportation, fitness, and competition.”

The sculpture will be attached to a bearing housing that allows 360° range of motion for display atop a pole or customized rooftop mounting bracket. The wheels spin freely as the wind blows for a pinwheel effect.

Specifications:

                     Materials: Stainless steel, powdered-coated

                     Dimensions: 41”H x 59”L x 22”W with 20.5” diameter wheels

                     Weight: Approx. 50 lbs

The proposed sculpture aligns with the City’s promotional efforts with Pflugerville as the Trail Capital of Texas. The sculpture is proposed at Wilbarger Creek Park South near a new dog park.

The City will be responsible for pouring the concrete footing and installing the pole on which the sculpture will be placed.
