Presentation and proclamation recognizing Hendrickson High School for their Community Service during the Big Event.

Summary
Mr. Zach Kleypas, Assistant Principal at Hendrickson High School, will give a brief presentation on the Big Event that occurred on Friday, March 13, 2015. Mayor Jeff Coleman is scheduled to present a proclamation recognizing Hendrickson High School for their community service during the event.

Pflugerville’s 1st annual Big Event took place at Hendrickson High School on Friday, March 13th, 2015. The Big Event started in 1982 at Texas A&M University as a student run community service project. During the event, a group of students at A&M got together and performed community service projects all around the city as a way to say “thank you” to the community for their support of the university and its students. This event has grown to include over 22,000 students at Texas A&M and has spread to many other universities across the country. It has even gone over seas to include events in Spain, Germany, Italy, and Pakistan.

On March 13 over 1,100 participating students and their accompanying staff sponsors were bused into the community to various locations such as Lake Pflugerville, parks and trails, neighborhood community centers, and other designated locations. At those job sites students performed safe, student friendly community services such as picking up trash, cleaning benches and playscapes, sweeping, shoveling, spreading mulch, etc.
The entire Big Event group collected more than 150 garbage bags of trash and tree limbs totaling 3750 lbs. The Big Event volunteers provided over 4400 man hours of labor throughout the city’s park and trail system. At an average of $13/hour the city saved $57,200 in employee salaries. The project was deemed a huge success by Mr. Kleypas and Mr. Eddie M. Garcia, Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Department Community Services Coordinator.
