Discuss and consider action to approve the purchase of “Daydreamer” and “One Way or Another” functional seating sculptures by Don Lawler.

 

Summary

From December '24 to January '25, the City conducted a nationwide Call for Artists to purchase existing sculptures or commission new sculptures. The sculptures are carved out of Indiana Limestone and are proposed to be located at Lake Pflugerville.

 

“Daydreamer” Artist Statement: “This whimsical, functional sculpture is about what people everywhere and anytime love to do - daydream. Relax and let yourself be swept away - to another time, another place.”

 

“Daydreamer” Specifications:

 

                     Year Created: 2017

                     Original; one of a kind

                     Materials: Indiana Limestone

                     Dimensions: 6’W x 3’D x 2’H 

                     Weight: Approx. 2,000

“One Way or Another” Artist Statement: “This functional sculpture is about the power to overcome adversity. Nothing can keep you down forever - Life will find a way.”

 

“One Way or Another” Specifications:

 

                     Year Created: 2022

                     Original; one of a kind

                     Materials: Indiana Limestone

                     Dimensions: 8’W x 4’H x 2’D

                     Weight: Approx. 4,000 lbs

 

The City will be responsible for pouring the concrete pads for the sculptures.

Fiscal Impact

$20,400 funded through Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenue. Additional costs will be associated with the installation of the sculptures with the pouring of concrete pads, estimated at approximately $6,500.
