Approving a resolution of the City of Pflugerville, Texas, proclaiming Pflugerville the Trail Capital of Texas.

Summary
Throughout the 2023 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan it was discovered the Pflugerville trail system is recognized as one of the largest systems in the State of Texas. The City of Pflugerville Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces has over 56 miles dedicated to trails; providing over 1.49 miles per 2,000 residents based on the current population.

By adopting trails as symbol of the city, City Council and City Staff are encouraging public interest in the natural environment, healthy lifestyles and prioritizing connectivity and accessibility within the community.

Trail Capital of Texas timeline:
Staff plans to follow the same steps and timeline the City of Kyle used to gain the Pie Capital of Texas title, signed by Governor Abbot two years ago.
1. First step is to show proof of concept.
o We used the benchmarking process through our master plan efforts to compare our trails offerings to others in the state.
2. Second step is to inform leadership of our intent.
o Through lunch and learn and presentations to PCDC, the Equity Commission, P&Z, Parks Commission and City Council we have updated elected and appointed officials of our findings and our plan to pursue the Trail Capital of Texas title.
3. Third step is to have City Council confirm and support our intent to pursue the title.
o 2018 the City of Kyle City Council approved a launch of the Pie Capital of Texas program.
o We are currently at this step in our process. City Council has the opportunity to approve and recognize our pursuit of the Trail Capital of Texas program.
o City of Kyle continued to launch programs that supported their pursuits at this time, we would do the same with continuing improvements and maintenance on the trails, continuing our trail gap program, and continuing with our trail walking programs and events.
