Summary
The Parks and Recreation Department is seeking to purchase shade sail canopies through Playwell for equipment and Playworks for installation (Buyboard vendor #679-22) to provide shade over the Wilbarger Creek Park's turf play mounds area, adjacent to the playground, at a cost of $95,997.58. Funding for this project will be supported by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds in the amount of $73,792 and through the general fund for the remaining amount of $22,205.58.
Although the installation of this shade will not impact our overall shade coverage score due to the Wilbarger Creek playground already having integrated shade but adding this shade to the mounds will increase the amount of users in that park that can experience shade and will reduce the heat off the surface of the turf 10-15%. These turf play mound areas are very popular with families and our youngest park users. Shade in this area will greatly increase the overall play value in this park and quality of life of the users of this space.
This item is supported by the infrastructure pillar of the Strategic Plan and aligns with City Council’s strategic objective to foster community engagement through vibrant parks and recreation services.
