Title

Proclamation declaring May 12-18, 2019 as National Police Week in the City of Pflugerville.

Summary

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Memorial Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our nation's capitol each year.

National Police Week is a time to honor the service and sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy. To recognize National Police Week 2019, Sunday, May 12 through Saturday, May 18, and to honor the service and sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities, the Pflugerville Police Department will have blue ribbons to hand out to residents.  Residents are encouraged to hang blue ribbons on trees in their front yard in support of law enforcement. This year, Lieutenant Jared Bruno and Corporal Alex Grana will represent the Pflugerville Police Department and go to our nation’s capital and stand in solidarity with other departments from around the country in honor of this year’s National Police Week.
